Enlighten was a service that comprised of a flexible integrated system that worked with the following groups of children and young people (CYP):
- Primary school aged children exhibiting signs of sexualised behaviour not in-line with age appropriate norms
- Young People of secondary school age who had considerable risk factors associated with becoming victims of child sexual exploitation (CSE)
Enlighten provided a flexible integrated system to meet the needs of vulnerable CYP so the following would occur:
- Reduction in the frequency of young people displaying inappropriate behaviour
- Reduction in young people using toxic stressors to manage their situation and emotions
- Address problem behaviours early
- Specialist intervention to help reprogramme problematic behaviours
- Reduction and prevention of CYP presenting in criminal justice systems due to offences relating to committing sexualised behaviour not in-line with age appropriate norms and in the social care/health/police system due to becoming a victim of CSE
We engaged children/young people and families to empower them to take control of their own programme using a variety of methods including:
- Creative CBT games using interests of the child to support motivation, for example computer games or sports
- Involving child and family in designing the programme and setting goals
- Gathering of feedback using age appropriate tools and completion of Outcomes Stars at the beginning, middle and end of the programme
- Final report and a family friendly letter to the young person and family to share progress and reinforce messages of respect and safety
